Here we go... 2014...

With 2014 come new challenges AND changes. I've worked out a few things in my head and feel like things are going in the right direction with my life.

First Off I need to doing a huge shout out to my Rock. We have been through a great deal together in the time we have been together, this second thesis will definitely be a trying time for us. I know that many of my co-workers and classmates' relationships have not survived the hell that is. So much of a writers personal time has to be invested deep into their subject matter. Most always the other partner feels like they are being shut out of their lives, left to the wayside, or plainly just don't understand the magnitude of what a thesis writer goes through. My first 3 thesis (2 undergrad, 1 grad) I didn't have a significant other so I never had to deal with these issues, so naturally I am a bit concerned - but I also know how strong we are. :)

As for the actual thesis. Okay I've been there, done that, too many times. Way too many. This time around I'm crossing my fingers that no one dies. I know that sounds rough, but having an advisor suddenly pass away when you're beginning the large thesis process is jarring, emotional, and exhausting - especially when you have start all over with another advisor.

Thesis Topic: INCLUSION... I know, but don't know where this is going. Further updates shall reveal, and as much as possible I will post my assignments and follow-up.

Employment: Often times when you come to a fork you don't know which tine to take and depending on the type of fork it is, there are many tines. At jobs, you're supposed to be challenged, at times you will become overwhelmed, overworked, under appreciated, under paid, etc, etc etccccc. There are also breaking points and signs that appear. Over the course of my year of employment, various opportunities have popped up to me and I haven't ever gone against my "I will ONLY work in NON-PROFIT." flag. However... in light of the impending school loans I face, the reality of pay of a non-profit organization. I have to say that my white flag may be rising a bit. I've done some scanning on the side, updated my resume, sort of. So I decided to start researching these feelings...

Here is by far the best article I have come across. Internalizing this really helps rationalize.

Your current role / employer:
  • What are the responsibilities or challenges of your position that you do not enjoy or make you dissatisfied?
  • What are the aspects of your role that you do not like? (i.e. co-workers, reporting relationships, compensation)
  • What are the characteristics of your employer that make you feel like you do not belong there? (i.e. work environment, corporate culture, organizational values and principles, short- and long-term objectives and strategies)
Your ideal role / employer:
  • What types of responsibilities and challenges do you enjoy?
  • What are your skills? What is your expertise?
  • What do you really want to do with your career? What are your professional goals?
  • What are your personal goals and what does your career need to offer to support those objectives?
  • What meaning do you want from your job?
  • What type of corporate culture do you thrive within? What values and principles does your ideal employer support?
  • What is your ideal work environment?
  • What type of organizational structure best supports your work style?
