Monthly Update Sept - October

Way behind in a post this started as monthly one; but never published the draft... so instead here's a time line of our doings

9/26
Where are we with the project?

October 3rd we will be presenting at the International Facility Management Association's World Workplace in the e-Poster event. Our presentation has been made for a couple of weeks, but it really needs to be cleaned up in order to give it that sophisticated style it needs. I mean we are about technology integration and real life case studies... probably should look like that.

9/29
We've finallized our presentation. Five WHOLE slides. We actually used our suggested technologies to do our presentation work - google hangouts, google drive, and dropbox. It looks good and I'm pretty confident with what we have here.

10/3
I hit the road about 6:30am to get down to Philly to meet my partner. We hope that the Holiday Inn Express lets us in; after some deep soul wrecking begging and a little white lie... we're let in to our room early. After getting ourselves ready, we do a couple run thru's of the presentation. Mixed emotions of giddiness. We are scheduled to present at 1pm and are to meet at the Atrium.

{For professional reasons, I have decided to completely edit what was previously written in the heat of the moment.}

Presentation Go:
We arrived in this massive atrium...with a small set up of about 40 chairs, a stage set for a panel discussion, lectern, and projector w/screen. Cool... but it was empty. We figured we were told 12:30 but everyone would probably be late... for once I was completely on time, if not a few minutes early. . . After a bit of hand wringing, my partner and I walking around, we see two men walking towards us. Yay, people started to show up. One was the 'moderator' of the competition, and the other was another participant. Turns out the other participant and Team Pratt, were the only ones to present... we had a 50/50 chance of winning. Go Team. The presentations went well. We ended up winning, YAY team.

Group Discussion:
After our presentations, there was a group of the scholarship award winners, student attendees, educators and the IFMA foundation board. We discussed various problems of the foundation - from the amount of applications for awards and for the competition. I was very torn about the talk. Students were in the middle professionals and educators were on the outside looking at the backs our heads. Being in the large atrium it was nearly impossible to hear people and I thought over all that it was unproductive. However, there were certain ideas that I walked away from 1) things we can add to our conference to make it better 2) things that I can add to the committee to make it stronger.

The Now:
We still have no idea what we won, there's been no follow-up from IFMAF as of yet. As a chair on a committee that is supposed to promote activities like eposter, I'm completely hesitant, almost un-supportive of the idea of someone else entering.  The amount of time that we've put into the project and the amount of time we spent on the paperwork, the presentation, seems almost not worth it at this point for another student to do [what would they get out of the experience that I had?]. However, when I brought the discussion back to my board this past week, talking about the negative experience shed some light on the changes that need to be made... I want to be a part of those changes
.
So that's where it stands... Until next time.
